I am suffering from cirrhosis of liver. When should I consider undergoing liver transplantation?

Recognition of cirrhosis per se does not imply a need for liver transplantation. Liver transplantation is the definitive management of cirrhosis once the medical therapy fails. The common indications for undergoing liver transplantation is development of end stage liver disease and its complications like infection of the ascitic fluid (spontaneous bacterial peritonitis), hepatic encephalopathy, kidney failure related to liver disease (Hepatorenal syndrome), jaundice not improving in spite of medical therapy and development of liver cancer (Hepatocellular carcinoma). Two prognostic scores that help in deciding about the need for liver transplantation include CTP and MELD which can be easily calculated with online calculators.
